The Watermelon Debate

Happy Weekend, Doll,

How are ya?

I hope you’re having a great start to the weekend!  I know I am.

This morning my tummy enjoyed from Organic Watermelon.  Our very first of the season!

We went for a hike after dinner to get my sweat on for Day 40 of LiveFit and we headed out for this forest frolic after dinner.  After the nature walk, we hit up Whole Foods for some much needed eats!

Oh baby!  We  got the necessities last night – Veggies, Fruit, Wax Paper and Dark Chocolate ;)  Who can live with out their dark chocolate??  EEEKK!!

So watermelon ended up in our cart because Ryan LOVES them and they were on sale.  I can remember growing up my dad hating water melon and it wasn’t in the house a whole lot.  Michelle really loved it, but I was always “in the middle” with it.  I could take it or leave it.  Some days I’d rather leave it for some reason….

I do have a question though – you know how sometimes you can get a quarter of a watermelon??  Are the knives clean that the dudes in Whole Foods cut them with?!

I’m that weirdo that washes the outside of the watermelon before taking my first whack at it….you never know whats living on there!  BLAH.

Anyways, back to eating melon.

I steered clear of watermelon when my skin was horrible because it was so high in sugar, but then on the flip side, its super Alkaline.  So which is better in your books?  High Sugar, or High Alkaline??

This morning I tested to see if eating Watermelon first thing on an empty stomach {the way ALL melons should be eaten…alone!} would make my heart race, make me feel more “sugary” and so far nada.  I know when I eat some high sugar fruit, foods or high gi index foods I can actually feel it and with this, I just enjoyed the taste and no buzz after.

I know its making me super hungry for my next course which will be Greek Yogurt, Shake Mix and made into a Mousse topped with Strawberries!  My favorite!

Speaking of buzz I am coffee free as of right now, and I need to fix that!  I think I’ll slide into my flip flops and walk my booty to the local Starbucks.  Of course, I’m not only wearing flip flops ;)  LOL!

I would love to hear your take on watermelon!  Do you love it?  Do you hate it? Do you eat it often?  Does the sugar in the melon keep you away??

To Your Glam Life,

xxoo

Kris

Hmm…that is all interesting. I suppose I fall on the pro watermelon side. I think it has lycopene in it in amounts greater than tomatoes. Also, I think you did the perfect thing eating it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. I have very little self control and mix fruit in with my oatmeal, but I read that eating fruit alone on an empty empty stomach was good because then it passes through your system quickly and does not rot or ferment (their words not mine) in your stomach. Not 100% sure of the science behind this but I thought it was interesting enough to remember.

    Hey Kris,

First off – your shopping cart is leaving me drooling – especially that chocolate YUM! I like watermelon on a super hot summer day…but really as an occasional thing. Yes, it has sugar – but on those super hot days its a nice boost. I saw a recipe online that paired watermelon with feta cheese and cucumber slices as a snack. I think that would be even tastier with goat cheese (not a fan of feta). I wouldn’t worry too much about the sugar in the watermelon especially if you aren’t eating it all the time. I also wash the outside of melons, squash, etc before cutting into them – everyone should!!

I hate watermelon actually! Melons and me do not get along, I just dislike them for some reason. They also make me super hungry exactly 2.2 seconds after finishing, so I guess I just don’t care for them in general. Strawberries and bananas on the other hand, I love. Yay starbucks! I just came home from there :)

Not a huge watermelon lover…makes my guts are rumbly cuz it’s so high in fructose (and I have fructose malabsorption). I do love other kinds of melon though! Cantaloupe with strawberries is a great combination and one I enjoy regularly

I love watermelon. It’s sweet but totally worth it to me. I made the most yummy tasting margaritas with frozen watermelon balls and fresh squeezed lime juice. They tasted like a jolly rancher.

I absolutely love watermelon, it is one of my top 5 favorite fruits! One of my favorite childhood memories was spending a day outside at our pool, my mom bringing us juicy watermelon as a snack, our eyes slightly stinging from the chlorene and then coming in to watch a disney movie. I don’t know why that means so much to me but it does, lol.

I LOVE watermelon. I just bought one on the weekend and finished it 2 days later (ate at least 85% of it by myself). It is high in sugar but I just hit the gym harder. Can’t sacrifice what I love!! Mmmm.

I love watermelon a lot, and I can eat about half of one in a sitting. I don’t worry about natural sugars like that at all.

I’m like you, 50/50 about watermelons. I never really considered their sugar content before. Eeek! Maybe I should check that out. Last year I bought one for myself and in an attempt to finish it I started making watermelon-lemon or lime slushies for breakfast. I didn’t know what else to do with it.
