For a good 6 months I gave up ALL desserts or treats [except for my beloved 88% dark chocolate] because I was so desperate to clear my acne. I remember feeling as if I sold my soul and I was missing all life’s enjoyments, like freaking APPLE PIE and or a warm muffin with butter on it…. I believed all these things needed to be shut out of my life if I wanted clear skin!
Well, well, not true is it?! This is when I realized I don’t have to sell my soul to clear my acne and that I have a choice in the ingredients that go in my food and on my body!
Going grain-free was super helpful for me and I shared with you in a blog post a couple years ago now, how I started a grain free lifestyle [not that I’m always 100% grain free, but 98% of the time I am!] and the experience I had right off the bat – read that post here!
Don’t be fooled and think that you have to walk a straight and narrow line when it comes to your food if you’re trying to heal yourself, especially your skin because you have a ton of great low glycemic options and I know that acne or aging isn’t just caused from the foods you eat, but I’m going to do a blog post on that another day. But seriously, a little coconut sugar is OK! A little maple syrup (in moderation) is juicy! My only “clear skin” recommendation when it comes to dessert is to eat grain free, nut free and dairy free!
Nuts, grains and dairy does irritate my skin and gut! How about you?
So, if you want to feel good after eating dessert and if you understand how important eating a diet with minimal sugar, you will LOVE today’s paleo apple pie!
Wanna get into this pie or what?!
Paleo [Nut Free] Apple PIE!
*I made this into a little 6″ pie. Just enough for my love and I.
Paleo Nut Free Crust:
1/4 cup coconut oil, melted
1 tbsp honey
1/8 tsp sea salt
1/4 cup + 1 tbsp coconut flour
To Make Nut Free Paleo Pie Crust:
Preheat oven to 400.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the coconut oil, honey, sea salt and egg with a fork. Add in the coconut flour and stir until the dough starts to ball and stick together.
Place the dough into a greased pie dish [I used a small 6″ ceramic pie dish] and firmly pat the dough into the shape of your crust. Make sure the crust is even thickness.
Poke the crust with a fork on the bottom.
Bake for 8 minutes.
Low Glycemic Apple Pie Filling:
*while your crust is baking, prep the apple filling!
1 cup boiling water
1 sliced mackintosh apple (or any delicious fall apple you adore)
1/8 tsp sea salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 1/2 tbsp coconut sugar
To Make Low Glycemic Apple Pie Filling:
Bring your water to a boil in a small sauce pan. When the water is boiling, remove from the heat and add your sliced apples into the water for 6 minutes.
Remove your apples from the water onto a paper towel and pat dry.
Add your apples and remaining ingredients to a mixing bowl and toss until the apples are covered in the salt, cinnamon and sugar.
Assemble and Bake Your Paleo Pie!
Remove your crust from the oven and arrange your cinnamon and sugared apples to the crust evenly.
Lower the oven to 350.
Bake the pie for 15 minutes at 350.
Let cool and slice and eat while sipping your Dairy Free Wild Orange Hot Chocolate!
Just so you know, this was polished off in under 24 hours…
This paleo pie is fresh, delicious and totally GUILT free in my opinion ; )
