It’s Tighten Tuesday my friends!
It’s been an exciting week since I last posted. On Thursday, I went to the opening of Vancouver’s first Pinkberry! YAY! We finally got the mouthwatering froyo! It only took a few years… no biggy. This weekend I decided to take it easy and save my energy for the weekend coming up. Kelowna is calling my name! I walked the streets of Vancouver and soaked in the rays. I even bought some new aviators since I’ve become forgetful in my old age (haha) and accidentally sat on my good pair 🙁 These will have to do 😀
People have been asking me a lot of diet questions especially when it comes to breakfast. The main focus is healthy options that give people variety, satisfy cravings and pump you full of energy. I know it can be hard not to buy into the whole cereal phase. No matter how healthy the box of Vector cereal says it is for you… it’s really not! Not only is it loaded with unwanted sugar it has so many preservatives that harm your body instead energizing you.
If there is one thing I want some of you to walk away with when reading this post is EAT BREAKFAST! Skipping meals actually makes you gain weight! It’s not a myth… It’s a fact. I know a lot of people say they aren’t hungry first thing in the morning so they skip breakfast. I think that could be one of the worst things for you. Eating breakfast gives your body the major energy boost that it craves. It starts you day off right, so eat, eat, eat. Studies have even shown that when you eat breakfast you are less inclined to over indulge during the day and have more energy to conquer whatever the day throws at you!
Two of my favourite breakfast options are Chocolate Steel-Cut Oatmeal and Lemon Blueberry Rice Muffins! On the weekdays I only eat my chocolate lovers steel cut oatmeal. It’s full of protein, fibre and antioxidants. The best part of this recipe is it satisfies the chocolate craving along with keeping me full till lunchtime.
1/2 cup Steel-Cut Oats
1 1/2 Cup Water
1 heaping TBSP Cocoa Powder
1 tsp Stevia (or Maple Syrup)
handful of fresh berries
1/3 Cup Rice Milk
Bring the steel cut oats and water to a boil. Lower heat and let simmer for 12 minutes. Stir in cocoa and stevia and add fresh berries and rice milk. TA-DA! Chocolatey Steel-Cut Oatmeal.
Let’s move onto my favourite healthy breakfast indulgence on the weekends. As you know Kris and I LOVE our muffins… We’ve probably tried all the gluten free muffins sold at Whole Foods. I used to be in love with the Banana Rice Muffins but I wanted more variety so I tried Udi’s Muffins. They were fantastic. They taste like mini cakes and it shows in the sugar content. It’s so unfortunate that the sugar is SO high in the muffins cause they are very very tasty. Kris and I decided to try North Vancouver’s own Mountain Top Bakery Lemon Blueberry muffins. Let me tell you these muffins are to die for. I love them! The best part besides the lemony good-ness.. is the fact that they have NO added sugar. They are sweetened with apple juice! 1 gram of sugar in one muffin! HELLO! These muffins are sold at all Whole Foods, Capers, and Planet Organic. Give them a try 😉
Breakfast is key to a great day… if you deprive yourself of breakfast your not helping your body kick start the day, so try to eat something… if it is just a protein bar, it’s better then nothing!
What’s your favourite breakfast?!
